A Family Guide to Crans-Montana with Kids
Crans-Montana is one of those rare mountain resorts that genuinely works for families. Not just in a brochure-friendly way, but in a practical, day-to-day way. Here is what you need to know.
Getting There
Crans-Montana is about 2.5 hours from Geneva, 2 hours from Zurich, or 3 hours from Milan. If you are flying in, Geneva is the most convenient airport. The drive up from the Rhone valley floor takes about 20 minutes on a well-maintained mountain road. There is also a funicular from Sierre if you prefer not to drive.
Where to Stay
The resort stretches between two towns: Crans (more upscale, more shops) and Montana (more local, more relaxed). For families, staying near the Barzettes or Violettes area gives you easy access to the gondolas without driving through the center.
Many chalets and apartments come with ski-in/ski-out access or are a short walk to the lifts. Avoid the very center of Crans if you have young kids -- it is more of a shopping and nightlife area.
Skiing with Kids
This is where we have strong opinions.
At Enjoy The Ride, our philosophy is simple: fun first, always. Our instructors focus on making kids feel safe, having a great time, and building real confidence on the mountain. If your 4-year-old spends the entire lesson making snowballs and sliding 10 meters with a huge smile, that is a win. They will want to come back tomorrow. That is how real progress happens.
We offer:
- Mini Discovery (ages 2-4): A gentle 1-hour introduction. No commitment, just seeing how they react to snow.
- Private lessons (all ages): Tailored entirely to your child. Their pace, their interests, their comfort zone.
- Family sessions: Parents and kids together. Great for families who want to share the experience.
Beyond Skiing
If the kids need a break from the slopes (or you do), Crans-Montana has plenty:
- Walk with Upps the St. Bernard: Our resident St. Bernard leads a gentle walk through the snow. Kids get a ride on a small sled pulled by Upps, and everyone gets hot chocolate at the end. Adults get theirs with a little something extra. It is one of the most popular things we offer.
- Ice skating rink in the center of Montana
- Sledding on designated runs (equipment rental available)
- Swimming pool at the Regis sports center
- Cross-country skiing on the flat trails around the golf course
Practical Tips
- Lift passes for kids under 9 are free in Crans-Montana. This is a significant saving compared to other Swiss resorts.
- Sunscreen is essential -- at 1,500m altitude with south-facing slopes, the sun is intense even in winter.
- Book lessons in advance during high season (Christmas, February, Easter). Instructor availability fills up fast. A 50% deposit secures the booking.
- Layers, not bulk -- kids move better in thinner, flexible layers than in one massive jacket.
Our Honest Take
Crans-Montana is not the biggest resort in Switzerland, and it is not trying to be. What it offers is a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere with spectacular views, excellent sun exposure, and a village that does not feel like a theme park. It is the kind of place where kids can grow up loving the mountains.
